50 Years of Building Communities

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was created on July 1, 1970.  For more than 50 years, we've been building communities across Pennsylvania.

Telling PennDOT's Story

Through the years, PennDOT's dedicated employees have been the backbone of our organization. We can't tell the story of our 50 years as an agency without recognizing the people who have spent many decades serving the public.

Our success is also dependent on strong leadership. The entire department is overseen by the Secretary of Transportation and our other department executives.  Pennsylvania's Secretary of Transportation is a title that has only been held by twelve individuals throughout our 50+ years as a department. The current secretary, Yassmin Gramian, P.E., is the second woman to hold the position.

Exploring Our History

At PennDOT, we're continuously looking for innovative solutions to improve transportation for the future, but we still realize the importance of our history.  At times, the examples of our predecessors can inform solutions to modern challenges.

See our timeline of events below for more information on major transportation milestones in Pennsylvania's history.
